Can I microchip my cat myself? ›

Believe it or not, it's entirely legal and possible to have a pet microchip implanted by someone other than a veterinarian. While it isn't required, it's highly recommended to have your pet's microchip implanted by a veterinarian, at a pet hospital, or through other animal health services.

Microchip numbers are normally 15 digits long. If you are a new pet owner you should find this attached to your microchip receipt or paperwork, normally displayed under a barcode label. If you cannot find it, please contact the person you got the animal from, or you can ask your vet to scan your pet.

Unfortunately, no. A smart phone can not and will not ever be able to read a pet's microchip. There are no apps for iphone or android that do this and there never will be.

Only a trained professional such as a vet can fit your cat with a microchip. You can arrange an appointment at your local vet. Some animal charities and organisations also offer microchipping. Some will offer it free of charge.

Myth #5: Microchips expire.

Fact: Every microchip comes in packaging with an expiration date, but that only tells the shelter or clinic how long the package will remain sterile. If the chip is planted before that date, it will stay safe and sterile. Once implanted, the pet microchip itself never expires.

Changing microchip details without previous owner

You can take the pet to a shelter or a vet to get it scanned. They will be able to tell you which company the microchip is registered with. They will also provide you with the unique microchip code.

Updating your details

You're responsible for keeping your pet's microchip information up to date, for example if you move house. Contact the database company your dog or cat is registered with to update any of your details. You might be charged a fee for updating your pet's microchip information.

The best way to tell if a dog is microchipped is to take them to a vet or animal shelter to get scanned. You can also check the dog's collar to see if it says they're microchipped. Or, feel for a firm, rice-sized object between the dog's neck and shoulder blades.

A microchip isn't the same as a GPS device, and it can't be used to track your pet's whereabouts. It's simply a unique identifier (think of it as your pet's social security number) that is implanted so it can't be lost. Microchips are an essential backup option for pet identification but should never be the main one.
