Slime Rancher 2, like its predecessor relies on notes for the majority of its lore. In the first game, these notes arrived in your mailbox at the ranch, but in the second game, you need to go looking for drones.

Collecting every drone note can be tricky since there is no indication of when you've seen them all, and many players don't know that you can get a second note from each drone after crafting the Drone Key. Luckily, this list exists with all the drone locations in Slime Rancher 2, and instructions on how to get and use the drone key.
The Drone Archive Key
The Drone Archive Key is an item you can make using the Slime Science Lab. This key is used to unlock an additional note on each drone.
How To Unlock The Drone Archive Key
The Drone Archive Key is unlocked by completing several tasks in the game:
- Talking to Miles on the comm station every time you can for several days.
- Finding and speaking with multiple drones.
- Popping the Flutter Gordo in the Starlight Strand.
Once you've completed these tasks Miles will give you the blueprint for the key.
How To Craft The Drone Archive Key
Once you've unlocked the Drone Archive Key, you can craft it using the lab. It requires:
- 20 Jellystone
- 10 Lava Dust
- 20 Fire Plorts
- 20 Hunter Plorts
- 1500 Newbucks
Using The Drone Archive Key
After the key has been crafted, the player will get a prompt to use the key each time they talk to a drone in the bottom right-hand corner of the message window. Upon using the key a second, earlier message will show.

Drones In The Conservatory
As with treasure pods, there are a couple of drones in the Conservatory. You'll find one in the main area of the ranch and one in each expansion.

Drones In The Starlight Strand
There are six drones in The Starlight Strand. This is the first area where it is advisable to use a jetpack to reach locations, however, it is not necessary.

Drones In Ember Valley
The six drones in Ember Valley start to really give you details about the sad story of Rainbow Island. You'll need a jetpack to navigate this zone, but this is easily acquired by collecting the Radiant Ore nodes which are plentiful near the teleporter.

Drones In The Powderfall Bluffs
In the Powderfall Bluffs you will find four drones hidden among the ice and snow. Some are best reached using disappearing walkways, so consider going out at night.
