I wasn't sure what to expect for the low price. I was hoping to try a PS3 Gamepad using a 360 analog layout. Based on the mixed reviews I wasn't expecting too much. But this controller is actually really quality.

First of all, it doesn't feel cheap. It's quite solid and feels good in the hands. One of the only knocks I've got is that the right shoulder button is a little harder to reach than the DS3. The analogs are great, there's no dead zones but they're less sensitive than the original PS3 controllers. You'll have to push them farther to get the same reaction you'd normally expect. The "trigger" shoulder buttons in back I think are an improvement, I really like the quick smooth motion. Less friction than the DS3 and I get a surer response in games. That's dependent on user preference though. The controller is smooth and shiny instead of matte which causes for fingerprints and may be slippery if you have sweaty hands.

This is bluetooth like the original controller so you don't have to use a dongle and it'll wake the system from sleep. One very nice bonus is that you don't have to charge the controller with a PC or PS3 unlike the DS3. You can use a wall usb charger with the included cable.

The first time I charged it the battery life was terrible, maybe 3 hours. Surprisingly it improved dramatically with the second charge, it appears to last as long as the original controller. I certainly played about 12 hours before I noticed it was low on charge.

So if you want a solid controller for cheap, with a 360 style layout I think this is a great option. The only real negatives are the reduced sensitivity, and access to the right shoulder button. But I've been using this joystick exclusively over the DS3. I'm quite happy with my purchase, at half the price of stock.

Pros 360 analog layout, Bluetooth, Can charge without PC/PS3

Cons Less sensitive than DS3, Tougher to reach right shoulder button

First off, it must be stated that this controller has the oddest ergonomics I've encountered in a controller since some of the third-party N64 jobs way back when. It looks like the Xbox 360 controller, but the handles angle outwards instead of inwards, which forces your thumbs away from each other almost as if your hands are making the shape of a heart. It's awkward and never quite feels right, and this is going to turn some people off of this immediately.

PROS

+ Great analog sticks, D-Pad and face buttons

+ Supports Sixaxis motion controls

+ Solid build

+ Turbo functionality works well

+ Bluetooth connectivity means no dropped signals.

CONS

Wonky ergonomics

L1 & R1 are too small and angled away from your fingers, rendering them almost useless

L2 & R2 are triggers, but they offer no resistance whatsoever. Touch it like a feather and it goes down all the way. Bad for racing games which require a full analog range.

Weak force feedback. Some of the weakest vibration effects I've ever encountered.

Bluetooth doesn't drop out, but there is input lag when using it.

A mere 3 hours of battery life

I got this controller for less than $20, and it serves its purpose as a secondary controller. Any game that is trigger or shoulder button heavy should be avoided with this guy.

EDIT: After extensive use, 2 main issues came to light. First, the battery life is exceptionally poor. I can't get more than 3 hours out of a charge. Which brings me to issue #2, and it's a doozy: there is a half second of input lag when used wirelessly. If you turn the controller switch to "off" and connect it directly with the USB cord there is no lag. So this works great as a wired controller, but is worthless wireless considering the input lag. Bummer.

I purchased this controller due to the poor ergonomics of Sony's standard controllers for the PS3 (siaxis and DualShock) even though they are very high quality and precise. Sony's controllers have always lacked the intuitive placement of the analog sticks and D-pad that Nintendo use to have or the XBOX 360 has for their controllers. Plus, if you have big hands the Sony controllers are horrible. The Rocketfish Rapid Fire Wireless controller is the best third party XBOX-style controller I have tried for the PS3 and I've tried many. This controller has very good build quality with a nice, sleek plastic finish. The Rocketfish feels smooth in your hands yet offers enough grip even when your palms get sweaty. It is also near perfect in size, especially if you larger than average hands. The trigger buttons, due to their protruded design, are far easier to use than the standard Sony controller's. The action on all the buttons are smooth and relatively precise, although not as precise as Sony's controllers which are excellent in this respect. Also, having owned more than one of these, the Rocketfish controllers vary a little from one another when it comes to button precision and action. One may have a stiffer action and require more force than another, this probably indicates a lack of the highest and/or most stringent manufacturing standards. Lastly, I must admit that the Rocketfish Rapid Fire Wireless controller is not the longest lasting controller on the market and certainly will not last as long as the standard Sony controllers. Each I have owned last about a year to year and a half before it needs to be replaced! The decline is gradual and usually starts off with the rumble function working inadvertently, then the wireless function starts to act up, and finally one or more of the buttons fails. One way to possibly mitigate this lack of longevity is to buy more than one, hope they both function similarly, and take turns using them. Overall if you want an XBOX 360 style controller with good precision, no dead spots, true blue tooth wireless function with a wired option, thats slightly larger than the standard Sony controllers this is a good choice, just be prepared to buy another one in a year or so. Even though I don't know if Rocketfish still makes this particular model anymore.

Pros: Excellent build quality, good precision,no dead spots, true bluetooth or wired option, XBOX-style design, big enough for larger hands.

Cons: Inconsistent quality, lack of durability, gradual decline in operation, no longer in production (I think).
