Saints' Jake Haener: Steps in for Carr
7h ago
Haener entered Monday's loss to the Chiefs after starter Derek Carr (oblique) left the contest late due to injury, Mike Triplett of New Orleans Football reports.
Haener entered Monday's contest late and completed two of seven pass attempts for 17 yards while rushing twice for 11 yards in the eventual loss. Despite finishing with the same number of rushing attempts as passing, the Fresno State alum is not considered a rushing quarterback. Haener did complete 69 percent of his passes over a four-year collegiate career, so he would need to provide voluminous passing stats in any spot starts Carr may require (if any).

Saints' Derek Carr: Unable to return Monday
7h ago
Carr (oblique) was unable to return to Monday's 26-13 loss to the Chiefs after injuring his left oblique, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports.
Carr did not feel he could be effective enough to stay in the game, and there was not enough time left for the training staff to manage the issue. He finished the contest completing 18/28 passes for 165 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. The veteran was replaced under center by Jake Haner. Carr's status for Week 6 against Tampa Bay is seemingly uncertain until more information comes out regarding his injury.

Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes: Standout numbers in win
8h ago
Mahomes completed 28 of 39 passes for 331 yards with no touchdowns and one interception and rushed six times for 22 yards in the Chiefs' 26-13 win over the Saints on Monday night.
Despite being down yet another key skill-position player in Rashee Rice (IR, knee), Mahomes was in top form against a Saints defense that had made life mostly miserable for opposing quarterbacks heading into Monday night's contest. The two-time MVP seamlessly adapted to his circumstances by primarily concentrating his attention on the ever reliable Travis Kelce and complementary wideout JuJu Smith-Schuster, with whom he connected for a combined 16 completions and 200 yards on 18 total targets. Mahomes also made good use of other little-used pass catchers such as Mecole Hardman and Noah Gray, and the season-high yardage total he compiled was made all the more remarkable by the fact he connected with rookie first-round pick Xavier Worthy, who entered the night as the de facto No. 1 receiver, on only three occasions for 25 yards. Mahomes and the Chiefs head into a Week 6 bye before a road showdown and Super Bowl rematch with the 49ers on Sunday, Oct. 20.

Rattler (coach's decision) is inactive ahead of Monday night's matchup against the Chiefs.
Rattler will serve as the Saints' emergency third quarterback for the fifth consecutive game Monday night. The 2024 fifth-round pick will be able to take the field only if both Derek Carr and Jake Haener sustain injuries.

Colts' Anthony Richardson: Will start again when healthy
13h ago
Coach Shane Steichen said Monday that Richardson (oblique) "is our starting quarterback" when he returns to full health, Stephen Holder of ESPN.com reports.
Richardson took a big hit to his midsection during a Week 4 win against the Steelers that has sidelined him in the meantime. Veteran backup Joe Flacco has fared well since then, completing 49 of 70 passes for 527 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions over the course of seven-and-a-half quarters. The good play won't equate to further starts for Flacco once Richardson is good to go, but the second-year pro likely will need to bump up his activity level this week from the trio of limited practices he managed last week in order to suit up again this coming Sunday at Tennessee.
