This delicious breakfast or dessert is a simple copycat of the Paula Deen Krispy Kreme donut bread pudding recipe that has become so popular. While it isn't identical, I believe it's better than the one she made. If you like bread pudding and love a good plain glazed donut, you are sure to fall in love with this delicious combination.

Krispy Kreme Donut Bread Pudding

If you've never had bread pudding, you don't know what you are missing out on. I recently shared a French toast bread pudding recipe here and it is definitely a new family favorite. This recipe is just a bit different, and it combines my love of glazed donuts with the perfect dessert or breakfast you find in bread pudding.

If you've never made a bread pudding, then this is a great tutorial for any beginner. With easy to follow steps and simple ingredients, it is ideal for a new cook or someone who isn't comfortable with from-scratch baking.

Can I Make This With Any Donut?

You can definitely make this using any kind of glazed donut. I prefer Krispy Kreme but I've also made this using these leftover baked donuts, and even these apple pie donut holes. Of course, if you prefer, you can use a cake donut, chocolate donut, or even a cake mix donut.

Bread pudding is really all about the combination of egg, milk, and bread. So, the bread base can easily be swapped out for different flavors you prefer. Toast, cinnamon bread, raisin bread, and even day-old cinnamon rolls are also great choices in this recipe.

What Additions Go Into Bread Pudding?

While this base recipe is focused on the donut flavor, you can easily update yours with mix-in's that add both flavor and texture. I love that recipes like this lend themselves to such easy adaptation. If your family enjoys a bit more texture or if you happen to want a hint of spice, then you can easily mix one of the items below into the mix.

  • Add 1 teaspoon cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, or apple pie spice into the liquid mixture.
  • Replace the vanilla extract with almond extract or coconut extract.
  • Mix in coconut shreds.
  • Sprinkle the top with chopped walnuts, pecans, almonds, or macadamia nuts.
  • Mix in golden raisins, raisins, dried cranberries, dried apples, or dried apricots.
  • Add chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, spice chips, or even peanut butter chips.

Do I Need to Refrigerate Bread Pudding?

Yes. Since this is made with an egg and milk custard, it definitely should be refrigerated. I recommend letting it cool then covering with plastic wrap and storing in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

When serving, just cut a portion and reheat for 45 seconds to 1 minute in the microwave. If you know you can't eat all of it within 5 days, it can also be frozen in individual portions to pop out of the freezer and heat as desired.

Can I Use a Different Glaze?

If you want to add something to the top of this recipe, any glaze or even frosting can work. I like using the simple powdered sugar vanilla glaze as it is always easy to whip up and practically foolproof. You can, however, serve this with nothing on top, simply brush with butter, or even sprinkle with cinnamon.

Of course, my kids love when I add cream cheese frosting or just serve it with straight whipped cream and berries. All of these choices are delicious and make the bread pudding even better. Use what you prefer, and know that the best part is the pudding itself, and not the topping.

Chef's Tip

When making bread pudding, the key is to use stale bread that will soak up the custard mixture best. For this recipe, I recommend leaving the donuts out on the counter uncovered overnight. This should help dry them out for the ideal texture in this recipe.

If using a different type of donut, the cooking time may change. The lighter donuts cook faster in this mixture while a dense donut may require longer to cook through.
